Treasure!

Posted: June 30, 2010 by cletebontrager in Family, Uncategorized, Vision

Matthew 6:19-20 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Treasure. We need some of your treasure! As you seek to lay up treasure in heaven we ask that you would consider investing some of your earthly treasure in Restore Church for the advance of the gospel in Detroit. Our mission is to show & tell Jesus to every boy & girl, man & woman in the 48202 & 48206 zip codes of central Detroit multiple times through multiple expressions. Your contributions will be a significant part of spreading the saving fame of Jesus!

The people we will be  serving will have a harder time sustaining the church economically because our community is comprised mostly of the working poor.

There are two main areas that you can give to Restore Church.

The first is funding a salary for Mike & his family. As of 6/27 Mike is now on missionary status which is a fancy way of saying he now has no regular salary. Your giving will enable him on a full time basis to minister & equip others for ministry (Eph 4:11-12) as we begin the glorious & laborious process of planting a gospel-centered, missional-structured, incarnational-oriented ministry for all people.

The second is funding a budget for the church. These monies will go to outreach, projects, training, facilities, & other mission advancing opportunities.

PHASE 1 GOALS: Between the two giving areas we are looking to raise $8,000.00 a month as we seek to accomplish the great commission.

  • Mike will need $5,000 a month for his family.
  • Restore will need $3,000 a month for various projects once we hit the ground.

If you believe in what God is calling our team to and want to partner with us, you can help by giving an annual, monthly, or one-time gift.

You can find information on how to give on the right sidebar.

WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW IN RAISING SUPPORT

  • Clete & Family- Our family will be tent making .  We own Wholesale Wheel & Hubcap and sell products on the internet.  This generates enough income to support us.
  • Mike & Family- While living in Hillsboro until their house sells, Mike will be looking for a job and working on Restore projects and working with organizations in Detroit for partnership initiatives.  At this point he has $1,000.00 in support a month.  Mike has also graciously been given 4 months salary from Grace & Truth Bible Church so he can transition into Restore.
  • Restore Church- We have yet to have any monthly support come in, but God has blessed some one time gifts that total around $6,000.00, so far.

Praise God for the treasure that he has already blessed the church with for the mission in Detroit!

Thank you for prayerfully considering partnering with Restore Church!

A new chapter begins!

Posted: June 29, 2010 by mikehanafee in Uncategorized

After arriving home from a great family trip to San Francisco late Friday night (I will probably share a bit about some interesting experiences in this great city in coming posts) I preached my last sermon at Grace & Truth on Sunday.  It was an emotional time as I reflect on the tremendous privilege it was to serve this church for 5 years & all that God has taught me in this time. It is now officially the beginning of a new chapter and we are VERY excited about displaying & declaring the gospel to every boy & girl, man & woman in the 48202 & 48206 zip codes of Central Detroit multiple times in multiple expressions through Restore Church!

1. Pray for the sale of our house. Once the house sells we move. I am going to take a hit financially but that’s OK as we are investing in God’s eternal economy, not the one of this age. In the meanwhile, to diminish the degree to which we eat into our savings, I am going to look for work & already have resumes out for a few manufacturing jobs (my previous post USMC profession). Hopefully the house will sell very soon & this prove will to be a moot exercise but I want to be diligent in the interim.

2. Restore Church is now my full-time job. Much, much to do. I am working on a profile package to send to the planting organizations, churches, & individuals we have had communication with regarding Restore. I am growing our contact list. We are beginning the process of raising support. We are continuing training. We are visiting Detroit in a few weeks (hopefully one last time before we move!) to continue to build new relationships & to make some decisions regarding a house we are considering renovating. There is a lot of other stuff to do as well. And of course, we are continuing to seek by the power of the Holy Spirit to advance the gospel here in Hillsboro as we await our impending move.

Here are pictures of me preaching old school last Sunday (I wrote my message on a notepad while on vacation), our possible house (the Wall Street Journal did a fascinating article on the history of the house), & really cheesy proof that not only have I been a Tigers fan a long time I also actually once had hair on my head.

We set out at 8:47 am on Monday June 7, 2010 in a 1994 Isuzu NPR diesel 4 cylinder 15″ box truck.

I remember the time because I wanted to be on the road by 9:00 am.  So goal #1 Good to Go!

My goal for the truck was to take it and a load of hubcaps to the D.

Let me introduce you to the cast of characters.  Mike Hanafee, John Johnson and of course ME.

Now if you have been following Restore you know Mike and I, but may not know John.  He is a buddy of ours who was looking at moving to be on the launch team at Restore.  Great guy who loves Jesus.  Of course he had no idea of what might be instore for him with 2 guys who sometimes have trouble controlling themselves.

We wanted to drive straight through.  So that means everybody is driving.  We made it just into Utah as dusk was upon us.  So you know what that means, the dreaded Rockies in the dead of night.

Yes, we did hit the Rockies at night, but to make matters worse as we drove through Wyoming, it rained all night.

God was good though and the truck was a real trooper as it took each mountain with the gusto of any 4 cylinder diesel loaded with hubcaps.

We made it to the Nebraska border just as the sun was coming over the horizon.   First let me say Nebraska is  a state with not much in the way of gas stations.  We almost ran the truck empty twice of diesel, but we were able after much prayer to find a fuel station.

We made it to Detroit Michigan in less than 40 hours.  We ended up getting to Detroit at 4:00 am Wednesday morning.

So we got a hotel and slept for about 5 hours and were back up for a meeting in Novi.

All in all it was a fun trip.  God was gracious as we drove.  No mechanical issues, no personality issues, and no state patrol issues.  We drove around 2400 miles and it was good.

Some things to reflect on:

1. you don’t realize how bad the cab of the truck smells till after you have been out of it for a few hours.

2. we never stopped for food, we only stopped for fuel.  (we ate snacks the whole trip)

3. cigars though enjoyable don’t help the 1st reflection get better.

4. we actually did all love each other.  we had a blast.

5. don’t sit in the middle seat, it made your butt hurt.  springs must have been gone.

6. you needed to be almost passed out for sleep to come in a box truck.  noisy and uncomfortable.

7. cheesy signs on the back of trucks garner a lot of attention.

I Know Who I Am

Posted: June 21, 2010 by cletebontrager in Gospel Identities, Uncategorized

Chorus:
I know who I am
I know who I am
I know who I am
I am yours
I am yours (2x)

And you are mine
Jesus you are mine
You are mine
Jesus you are mine

I was running, and you found me
I was blind, and you gave me sight
You put a song of praise in me
I was broken, and you healed me
I was dying, and you gave me life
Lord, You are my identity

I know, I know

I am forgiven, I am your friend
I am accepted, I know who I am
I am secure, I’m confident
That I am loved, I know who I am
I am alive, I am set free
I belong to you and you belong to me

Does your heart resonate with this song?  Does your identity come through Christ and His finish work on the cross?  Do you live because He now lives?

Do you know who you are?  It is a big deal to know who you are!

What is your identity dad?  WORK – KIDS – SPORTS – MONEY

What is your identity in mom?  HOME – KIDS – FRIENDS

What is your identity kids?  FRIENDS – SPORTS – SCHOOL

Good things can become your identity instead of the ultimate thing and soon you are not on mission for Jesus.

At RESTORE we have 5 Gospel identities

1: Worshiper of God

2: Child of God

3: Learner of God

4: Servant of God

5: Missionary of God

Each identity should inform how we live out the mission Jesus gave to each Christian.  If your identity is not in Christ it is in something or someone else.  When we become a new creation things change.  Our philosophy of life changes, our goals change, our needs and wants change and our mission in life changes.

What is your mission?  If you are identified with Christ it is very clear.

2 Corinthians 5:17-21 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.  For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

Requiem for Detroit PART 6 ~ 8 Mile Road

The difference in the city vs. the burbs is a difference of white and black.  Literally that is the difference.

People living, but is it living or is it existing?  Education gone, jobs gone, love gone, hope gone.  What do you have left? DECAY.

That is why we need to be salt and light.  Salt preserves and helps slow decay and light brings hope when all is dark.

Do we just let things stay where they are or do we step in and spread the greatest hope?  Jesus wants to reconcile people to himself!

43 years of “Get your….!”

Posted: June 18, 2010 by mikehanafee in Uncategorized

Last Saturday night Clete, John, I (props to Clete for the tickets) attended the Tigers & Pirates interleague game. Pretty sweet – Guillen hit a laser shot into the right field stands for a 10th inning walk off homer. That was followed by the final of a singing contest (remember this is Motown) & a stunning fireworks display.
During the game we met Phillip, a vendor who has been hawking beer, hotdogs, & ice cream for 43 years. 43 years! This fun & friendly gentleman told many stories about things he had seen – like Denny McClain’s 31 win season & of course the ’84 World Series title. Imagine how many beers he has popped open, hot dogs he has sold, & ice cream bars he has served! Imagine how many times he has cried, “Get your…!”. Imagine how many steps he has walked & conversations, like ours, he has had! I was reminded of the grace & endurance we are going to need as we seek to serve all people of the 48202 & 48206 zip codes with the gospel. Many different people have said that the climate of Detroit particularly requires endurance, stamina, & perseverence for a ministry that really makes a difference. Please pray that we would be “strengthened with power through His Spirit” (Eph 3:16) that we might joyfully go all out for the ongoing gospel advance in this Acts 29 age!
Philip’s life also gives us another exhortation. In working as a vendor for the Tigers he is following in his grandfather’s footsteps. Are you leaving an example of gospel stamina & proclamation for your kids & grandkids to follow? Where are you finding your identity?
“Get your…!”

Just in time!

After a day long delay due to a cancelled flight (& being told we would not make it to Portland until Friday!) we made it back just in time for Kellie & Kevin’s graduation from 8th grade – thank you Lord! We were reminded of our need for patience & that God’s timing is perfect – a needed reminder in a time where much has to be accomplished for our move home to Detroit! (And perhaps we will score some tickets out if this!) We also saw afresh how creates new relationships through “unplanned” events. During the layover we met Hassan, a converted Muslim, who periodically flies to Detroit to volunteer in the kitchen of a mosque in order to create relationships to share Jesus. Pretty cool!
We have had a very very fruitful & busy trip – about 10 appointments, many new contacts, offers on two houses, greater understanding of our context, & increased vision clarity. (I think Clete is going to blog on this trip in a few days & I am including a few photos in this post.)
I will share here that I had a childhood dream fulfilled on this trip to Detroit – batting practice on the old Tiger Stadium field! On the way to one of our meetings we saw some people knocking the ball around on the old diamond (the stands were razed last year). We pulled over & jumped into the action & I was able to stroke a few liners on that historic field. Then I discovered the guy pitching was the catcher at a local high school just down the road from the high school I attended during the very same years, 1983-1987. What is more, turns out his business partner is a guy I hung with in high school who has since become a Christ follower!
This morning I am taking my family to San Francisco for a weeklong getaway after a very fast-paced spring. We are planning on escaping from Alcatraz. Then on June 27 I will preach one last time at Grace & Truth.
Please pray for the Bontrager & Hanafee families as we continue preparations to move to Detroit. Life is good & it is exciting to follow Jesus wherever He takes us!

On the ground in the D

Posted: June 10, 2010 by mikehanafee in Uncategorized

As you may of heard we covered the drive from Portland to Detroit in just under 40 hours (we put jet fuel in the box truck) arriving at 4AM Wednesday. After finding a hotel on priceline for $36 total we crashed for 5 hours before heading out to a meeting at Oakpointe Church in Novi. It was exciting to hear pastor Bob Shirock share the vision of E.A.C.H. The goal is for every person in Southeastern Michigan to see the gospel displayed & hear declared multiple times. This was yet another indication God is working to move on & in Detroit. Tuesday I will have the privilige of meeting with Bob to share the vision of Restore Church. In the afternoon we showed John the 48202 & 48206 zip codes plus looked at some houses.
Today we are meeting with Lisa Johanon of Central Detroit Christian Community Development Corporation. Lisa has served Christ for many years in Detroit & has much to share. Friday morning we meet with Ryan Kozey of Infinity Alliance who is flying in from Buffalo to walk the ground with us and offer his insight in planting churches in rustbelt cities.
For now we are chowing down at Leo’s Coney Island. That’s all for now.
Oh yeah, the verse I have thinking much of today is Jeremiah 29:7 – check it out.

Don’t let your church become a ghetto

Interesting discussion on theology & mission between 2 guys (A29 President Scott Thomas & L2 pastor Russ McKendry) I heard speak at the Denver A29 church-planting conference.

On the road again!

Posted: June 7, 2010 by mikehanafee in Uncategorized

As of 8:37AM Clete, John, & I are on the road headed for Detroit. (The cab seems a bit smaller than I remember it & it has only been 6 minutes of the 60 hours ahead!) Pray that this little 4 banger diesel box truck packed with hubcaps (Clete’s business) makes it over the Rockies & 2600 miles into the D. And pray that this trip is fruitful in our continuing preparations to plant Restore Church – in God’s kindess we have meetings with organizations & individuals interested in church planting scheduled every day we are in Detroit (10th-15th), starting Wednesday at 1PM. Well, this rig is shaking a bit too much to write so I better sign off. Acts 20:24!
