We’re here!

Posted: November 29, 2010 by mikehanafee in Detroit Info, Family, Friends

After a very fast-paced last 10 days we have arrived in Detroit and are pretty much unpacked.  Thanks much to all who helped us load in Hillsboro and unload in Detroit!

The 2,500 mile drive was fun, and at times, a bit harrowing. At the end of the first day of driving we hit minus 10 degree temperatures near Butte, Montana – brrrrrr to the max.  On the second day we encountered steady snowfall and “whiteout” conditions when a UPS double tractor trailer flew by us, kicking up snow for about 200 yards. It was cause for a spontaneous prayer meeting! That day we saw several overturned cars and trucks. The evening ended by  finding a hotel with an indoor waterside. The kids were pumped about this, but not so excited about making snow angels. The last two days of driving we made great time and arrived last Tuesday night at 8PM.

We knew we were close to home when we saw the large Uniroyal Tire on the east approach into Detroit. Thanks much to Clete (& his family!) for helping us with the drive.  Susan was especially thankful for this, given the weather conditions.

On Thanksgiving we enjoyed a great half-game of football (Lions 17, Pats 10;), a great meal, & great fellowship with friends & family. Earlier in the morning I walked with Kevin through our new neighborhood into downtown and took pictures of a few of the local “religious establishments”. The next day (Friday) I showed the family around central Detroit and in the evening we caught a state football championship game at Ford Field. It was pretty cool to be able to walk home from the stadium! Saturday we unpacked more and set up a temporary office. Sunday we worshiped at Hope Church in east Detroit – we were very encouraged by how they shared about us and prayed for us in the service. We ended the day by having  friends from Gospel Life Church in Madison Heights over to the house as we heard from some career missionaries to the Congo and discussed our call to be missionaries in central Detroit.

Today we are looking into schools for our children and scheduling meetings with many contacts we have made over the last several months. There is so much to do. Please pray God would give us wisdom way beyond ourselves and His peace, power, & presence in the midst of all that needs to be accomplished.  And above all pray that we would love God more, love man more, and  hear what the Spirit tells us as we seek to show & tell Jesus to every man, woman, & child of our community.

So we feel a bit like Dan Aykroyd coming out of the wind tunnel in “Spies Like Us”! Busy busy busy week spending time with lots of peeps & preparing to load up on Nov 19 to leave for Detroit on Nov 20, Lord willing. Already my heart is aching over leaving friends & neighbors. This weekend we will hang with several more friends, do some vehicle maintenance, pack boxes, & pick up Clete at the airport.  On Monday Clete & I are heading to Tacoma WA for Soma School 201 where we will learn more about missional community leadership, having a vision for your city, gospel-fluency, & gospel motivation.

If you have a few moments here are some ways you can pray:

1. For us to grow in the grace & knowledge of Jesus.

2. For me to love & shepherd Susan & our children well in this time of transition.

3. For the gospel to continue to work in the hearts of my friends in Hillsboro who don’t yet know Jesus & that God would send other Christians their way.

4. For us to have eyes to see the beauty of Detroit & hearts to be devastated by the brokenness of Detroit.

5. For support to continue to come in.

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. (1 Tim 1:15)

We’re jumping in!

In case you haven’t heard in less than 2 weeks we are jumping into Detroit!  Well, actually we are driving…but we are ready & excited. And when we get there we are going to jump out of the car!

Here’s a copy of a letter I recently sent to several friends as we seek partners in the gospel who will help us show & tell Jesus in central Detroit.

Dear friend and fellow Christ follower,

Very exciting news! After much prayer and preparation the long awaited time to move is less than a month away. On November 20 (what will no doubt be an emotional day!) we will leave for Detroit to plant Restore Church. I want to give a big shout out to so many of you who have provided much heartfelt encouragement and solid counsel!

As a missionary church planter I need your help to show and tell Jesus to every man, woman, and child of central Detroit. Launching a new church, especially in today’s economic climate, is a costly endeavor. But we remember God gave the ultimate gift and sacrifice in His Son in order to make us His children. As a response to the Father’s love for you and His desire to extend His love through you to those who are not yet His children, would you financially support my family so that in planting Restore Church we can give our full attention to making Jesus known and equipping others to do so?

We are seeking $4,300 a month, starting January 2011, to cover rent, food, utilities, home security system, health insurance, car insurance, social security, taxes, lower school education, and other living expenses for our family of seven.

Some have the resources to give boldly and consistently for an extended period of time while others can only commit at this time to a one-time gift. In the life of a young church plant truly every single dollar makes a difference!  Details on giving options can be found on the enclosed sheet. If you are not lead to financially support us, or are unable to, we would be very thankful for your prayers.

A brief video and a more detailed planting prospectus, as well as periodic updates, can be found at resdetroit.org.

With deep gratitude,

Mike
