The 32/6 Initiative

Posted: December 27, 2010 by mikehanafee in Core Values, Gospel Identities, Vision

“When is your launch date?” That is a question we hear frequently. Certainly it is a fair question & a good question. And no doubt the approach of planning for & advertising a big launch service has worked in some contexts. As one who loves to preach & looks forward to regularly preaching again this model is attractive to me. And judging by the interest in Restore Church expressed by those around metro Detroit we could probably pull off a fairly well attended “launch service” this spring.

In our context, however, such an approach in the long run would be counterproductive. The number in attendance, formal sermon, great band, prepared facility, etc might look good from a distance but, without a significant involvement of 48202 locals, it would communicate to our community (however sincere our intentions) that we’ll put on church while you come & watch. It will not breed & feed an indigenous movement. What is more, it will reinforce the popular notion in our context that church is about a special time, a special place, & a special man.

So we are taking a “slow-burn” approach. In this initial & embryonic phase, instead of seeing ourselves as planting a church service, we want to focus on planting the gospel in our local soil, out of which a church will arise. Then, when we advertise “public worship services”, locals will see that Restore is not a transplant from without but a movement from within, as evidenced by the real participation of long-time residents. We believe this deliberate approach will provide lasting traction and long term impact in the 48202.

Frankly, this approach scares the daylights out of me. We can’t manufacture this. God will have to step in. In the last 2 weeks Clete, Ruth, John, Susan, & I met twice to discuss goals for igniting this “slow-burn for long term impact” approach.  Each of us has set a goal for a certain number of growing relationships & a certain number of people to come to Christ in these relationships through our witness in the next 3 months. Collectively, we are seeking 32 growing relationships & 6 conversions by April 1. I guess that date is kind of appropriate, April Fool’s Day! We would be fools to think we can make this happen in our strength or by our ability, especially when you consider winter time (&  sub-freezing temperatures) is the worst time to meet people. But we remember our God is the God of the impossible and that He is the ultimate & unstoppable missionary, sending His Son to redeem a people for His endless glory!

We are seeking an army of prayer warriors who will relentlessly pray (& recruit others to pray) for the next 3 months that the Lord will breathe on our efforts as we seek the 32 & 6. Please email me at mikehanafee@resdetroit.org if you would commit to praying for this initiative. I will provide periodic updates to our prayer partners.  May God connect us to those He will call to Himself who we can pour ourselves into who will in turn disciple others (2 Tim 2:2).

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,  to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)

In a coming post I will share a bit about our plans to do an initial run through The Story-formed Way, study The Gospel in Life, & hold some vision meetings in the next 3 months.

Weekend at Riverview Church

Posted: December 20, 2010 by mikehanafee in Detroit Info

Saturday & Sunday we had the great privilege of sharing a bit about Restore Church in the worship services at Riverview Church in Holt, MI. Wow, it was a blast being with this church that has already been a massive blessing to us! We have been overwhelmed by their kindness & support.

In December Riverview took a break from teaching through the seven churches of Revelation to do a series entitled, “He Gave; We Give.”  This weekend Noel wrapped up the series on gospel stewardship by giving some specific applications and then introducing me about halfway into the message. You can listen here under week 4, December 18 & 19.

Many, many people talked to us after the services about Restore Church and all 50 of the planting prospectuses we set out were snapped up.  We were humbled by how many people expressed interest in helping in some way. One of the guys we spoke with had the Detroit Lion’s logo on a tooth – definitely a first for me! Maybe it was a way of saying rooting for the Lions is kind of like sitting in a dentist’s chair…but I’ll keep sitting in that chair!

I’ll close this post by asking you to pray for what I asked the people at Riverview to pray for in the last service – our marriages. Because Satan is ticked about the gospel advance he attacks planters & their marriages. So pray for my relationship with my very best friend, wife, & lover of nearly 16 years – that Susan & I will be increasingly shaped & fueled by the gospel in our marriage. We are thankful for the way God has been lavishing us with His grace & long for this to continue. And please pray for Clete & Ruth in this same vein.

Also, please pray that Clete, Ruth, Katie, Kellie, Clete, & Clay would have a great Christmas vacation visiting family in Wisconsin. They leave Tuesday morning & return Monday the 27th. Who knows what will happen at their house while they are away;)

Acts 20:24

Our first two weeks

It’s hard to believe but we have been in central Detroit for 2 weeks. God has been incredibly kind to us in many, many, many, ways. Here are just a few examples of how God is pouring out His grace on us:

  • Last week Kevin, Carolyn, Ian, & Claire were admitted into magnet schools. Considering the time of year & the normal process it takes for this to happen this is no small thing! This was nothing less than a merciful answer to the prayers of many.  I have not tired sharing the encouraging & funny story of how all this came together!
  • It has been confirmed that 1626 Boston Blvd will be fully renovated and that in 6-8 months (at an incredible price thanks to the work of several non-profits) we will move into this beautiful home in the heart of our ministry area.
  • We have been able to meet several locals, have friends of our ministry over to the house, and enjoy conversation around a fire at a neighbors house. This Friday & Saturday night we will be attending a few Christmas parties in our neighborhood.
  • I have been able to meet with several pastors from the area as well as some church planting organizations in the region. Many more meetings are on the docket.
  • On the weekend of Dec 18/19 I will be sharing a bit about Restore at a church in Lansing that has been a tremendous & tangible encouragement to us.
  • As families living together we are learning more & more what it means to apply the gospel to everyday life & relationship. We continue to be amazed by God’s love to us through the Bontragers.
  • Clete has received the deed to the building around the corner that will be location of his business. Once the place is secured we will begin cleanup. The goal is to have his business moved in 3-4 months.

This really is just a smattering of what has been going on. We are enjoying God’s love for us in the gospel! If there is one thing I have learned in 10 years of ministry it is how much help & grace I constantly need. Left to myself I will crash & burn. Left to ourselves we will crash & burn. To that end please pray that we will have a constant cognizant reliance on Jesus. This morning I read these words from Bob Kauflin, “I am a hopeless person but Jesus died for hopeless people.” How true! And what is more, we cracked pots (even crackpots!) have been given God’s Spirit so that we can show & tell Jesus for God’s glory! Pray that we will find our greatest joy in this purpose for which we were created & redeemed. Here’s a few other ways you can pray:

  • For wisdom & guidance for the Bontragers as they look to purchase a home in our area for longterm housing.
  • For relationships to develop with many people in 48202.
  • For God to send “faithful men ” our direction – both those that already know Christ & those that will come to know Christ – who we can disciple for indigenous gospel ministry & multiplication.
