Yep, my first car was a Vette…ok, a Chevette. Driving home one night I noticed it was running more sluggish than usual. Climbing a hill was particularly difficult even with the gas pedal pegged. Then I realized I had my parking break on — I had been working against the very progress I was seeking. (and wearing out my break pads!) That’s what legalism does to our forward movement in Christ. It slows us down & wears us out. In this message from Colossians 2:16-23 I show three ways legalism is a growth stunter & grace killer. It’s through Christ we become more like Christ!

Last week I participated in a few Vision360 discussions about discipleship. The plates were small (we met at Small Plates in Ferndale;) but the discussion was big. Alex made max use of the tablecloth!  And it was great to meet some other pastors in the area.

To divorce discipleship from evangelism is to do something the Bible doesn’t. Discipleship begins before conversion. Discipleship happens though the brain, heart, & fingertips. Every believer is a disciple maker & has the Spirit to do it! What if every small group saw themselves as a reproducing organism? Jesus Christ was obsessed with His mission & to be like Him is to also be obsessed with His mission.

At last week’s Missional Community meeting Paul did a great job teaching the material from the When Helping Hurts Conference. (He even brought into our “auditorium” high tech media!) In line with this several of us attended an energetic symposium last night on Gentrification. It was really helpful. Kurt Metzger of Data Driven Detroit gave an informative presentation on the demographics of our great city. For a excellent article on gentrification from a Kingdom perspective check out this article by Bob Lufton. Well worth your read. Oh yeah, just before the symposium I was able to work on my drum skills. I’m not quite ready to join the worship team.

Hey all,

I like to tell people that we are entering the 2nd trimester in our embryonic stage of planting Restore Church. Hard to believe that next Tuesday (Nov 22) we will have been in Detroit one year. Wow, time has flown by! To let you know how to pray for the next few months I thought I would push out our midrange schedule & share a really cool story.

First, Sunday Worship. (We have been meeting 1st & 3rd Sundays not as “preview services” but simply to gather around God’s word as a growing community. In God’s kindness several neighbors are coming to these worship services.) The next 5 worship services are as follows–Sunday November 20, Sunday December 4, Sunday December 18, Sunday January 15, & Sunday February 5. All of these services will be at the Bontragers (1247 Chicago) with the possible exception of January 15, the day before the MLK holiday. On that Sunday we will look at two-way reconciliation from Ephesians 2:11-22 in conjunction with some special activities.

Second, our West Lodge Missional Community. Our first MC launched in July with the mission of showing & telling Jesus in a 10 block area in our neighborhood. We now have 14 adults & 10 great kids in our MC. We gather on Wednesdays for a meal, prayer, study, fellowship, & strategizing. Christmas vacation may be a good time to drop in on a MC gathering for the several of you who have inquired about coming out for a night. Also, to tap in the rhythm of celebration we are holding a New Year’s Eve Party – looking forward to ringing in 2012 with a friends & neighbors!

Third, a neighborhood bible study. Through cookouts, service projects, & just being present in our community we have had the privilege of connecting with many many people who we now have the great privilege of knowing as friends. In order to share the good news of Jesus we are launching an 8 week session through The Story of God February 12 – April 1. I’m in need of a creative graphics person to help design some materials so if that’s you & you’d like to volunteer let me know.

Fourth, Easter Sunday 2012. We are considering concluding our Story of God run with an early AM easter celebration in the Bontrager’s large side yard adjacent to the Lodge Freeway. We’d love to secure a large GP type of tent for this so if you have access to one please let us know. Also, we are thinking about including a breakfast cookout & some fun stuff for the kids.

Fifth, worship facility & community center. It seems the Foodland Co building is a no go, & for good reason (I’ll share the story with you over coffee if you’d like). There are 2 church buildings in our community that are not used that extensively and that would be great facilities. Our hope is to have a place secured & ready for use for fall 2012.

Sixth, Christmas vacation visit. Pray for a few guys who will be visiting Detroit over the holidays to explore joining the mission with Restore. We are grateful that God has lead many to consider ministry in Detroit. This is fully in keeping with our 2 Timothy 2:2 burden!

Seventh, an encouraging story. Yesterday Restore Church received $5,000 from the estate of a woman I have never met via her daughter who I have never met who is married to a friend from my college fraternity days. He & I may have been the last 2 guys in our frat you would have ever guessed would become Christians, but in God’s mercy (& humor), we both became Christians after graduation, unbeknownst to each other. What a time we had 2 years ago when we reconnected and heard each others grace stories! Well yesterday I received this in the mail from his dear wife.

Dear Mike & friends at Restore Church – As Tom probably mentioned to you I have a connection in Detroit…both my parents (and their parents) grew up in the city. My mom grew up on Bennett Street (my grandfather – a former Ford & Chrysler auto worker – built their house!) and my dad grew up near Motown and attended Northwestern HS. They lived in the city until the late 1960′s, when my dad’s job transferred them to South Bend, IN (where I was born). But we have always spent summers and holidays in Detroit visiting family who remain in the area…clearly Detroit holds a special place in my heart (and Tom’s by proxy:) – so when my dear mom passed away in August (she was a great woman of faith who came to Christ at Highland Park Baptist Church, which is now in the suburbs), we though of you and Restore Church. My mother would be thrilled to know that her money was going to a ministry such as yours that is making such a difference in the town she loved! My sincere wish is that these funds will help many people see the light of Jesus that shown so brightly in mom’s life. God bless you and the work you are doing in Detroit!

Wow, what an encouragement to us as we seek to show & tell Jesus in central Detroit! We are thankful for the many ways the Lord is enabling us to minister in our city. As we are in an under-resourced area we are continuing to raise support, especially as we are now entering a phase where we need a larger worship & multipurpose space. Let us know if you might be interested in helping us.

Finally, pray for Johnny. He is a friend & neighbor that I long to see come to Jesus. A few nights ago he was jumped going to the corner store for cigarettes and took 8 stitches on his head. As always he has a sense of humor – “I was always told cigarettes kill, I just didn’t know in this way!” I was at his house this morning and he is thankful for those of you who have prayed for him.

For the advance,

Mike

Oh yeah, meet Chloe, the newest addition to our family. We found this sweet pit mix during an alley cleanup a few months ago, full of the mange and weighing only 28 lbs. She is now healthy, sassy, & 52 lbs… and a good addition to Susan’s morning walks I should add!

While we are definitely not a building centered ministry, there is a beautiful old church less than a mile away that I dream about as a worship space & community center. Getting it would require the same power that divided the Red Sea! The place needs much work & would cost a lot to restore. (Any millionaires out there want to pony up?;) Since arriving last fall this dilapidated church building has been boarded up, but currently a movie is being shot on sight and yesterday we were finally able to get inside . (For you film aficionados the movie is based on James Patterson’s novel I, Alex Cross and stars Tyler Perry.)

As I walked through this building that has stood at 8501 Woodward Avenue since 1911, I was struck by two things. (Well, actually three things when you include the ultimate fighting cage set up on the sanctuary floor for one of the movie scenes.) I noticed an old church covenant on the wall, recording the church’s commitment to itself and it’s community. And later Clete showed me an old church registry notating the death of several members in the 1930′s & 1940′s as if it happened yesterday. You can see the covenant & the registry in the pictures below. As I walked through this old facility these questions came to mind: How many people worshiped here through the years? Who were they? In what ways was Jesus lifted up & lives transformed in these ministries? How many songs echoed through those rafters and sermons sounded across the large auditorium? And then there were darker questions: Was the church ever integrated or did it go from a white congregation to a black congregation over night? Why does a church no longer meet there? Why is the original congregation (Woodward Avenue Presbyterian Church) like the seven churches of Revelation, dead and buried under the dust of time?

In glory I will worship with some of the saints who worshiped in this building. And maybe before then I’ll be able, like them, to worship in this building. It’s worth praying about! But far more than that I pray that Jesus will save, transform, & delight scores  & scores of people who live in the neighborhood around that old building. Buildings crumble but life in Christ is forever!

The pictures are from yesterday’s movie shooting, from places right around the building, & – I couldn’t resist – from Tuesday night’s Tigers’ game (we were on the 3rd row!). You can find a beautiful pictorial history of the church here. Finally, at the bottom there is a 20 second video of a recent tour inside the building.

Update: 25 & 7…but Jesus is alive!

I am updating this post as a friend just informed me that in several different incidents in Detroit last weekend 25 people (not 16) were shot and 7 were killed. Sounds like a report out of Iraq or Afghanistan. Sounds like something from post fall Genesis. Sobering. Last month a 5 year old girl who lives a few streets away from our neighborhood was abducted at 3AM in a family dispute, strangled, and her body dumped in a house set ablaze in a failed attempt to cover her murder. Appalling. Just this afternoon a pastor of a church that meets 8 blocks south of us told me that he has buried 6 young men this summer who have been murdered. It’s real.

While we do not feel immediately threatened as many – but not all – of these crimes are associated with drug activity, we are viscerally reminded that Detroit, with all it’s rich beauty, is a broken place. So would you commit to fervently pray that the gospel would powerfully move in the hearts of many here? Pray for safety, empowerment by the Spirit, redemption, restoration, & community transformation.

Man, I am so thankful that Jesus suffered the just wrath of God for our sins in our place on the cross; rose from the dead on the third day conquering death, hell, sin, & Satan; and right now is making all things new through the power of His risen life! That’s why we can have hope in the midst of brokenness. That’s why we know God can use us in His purpose of restoring all things to Himself. That’s why we can live with a holy abandon to the cause of the great commission, knowing that God reigns over every last atom of the universe and that death is only the gateway to His immediate presence. (As I write this blogpost a friend just texted me, “Live for the end.” Yes!) That’s why we know your prayers – yes, your prayers – for Detroit are heard and answered!

As an addendum to the first addition of this post let me share some thoughts on two wrong, and extreme, views of Detroit. One such view is that Detroit is nothing but death and destruction. Simply put, that is a massively ignorant and woefully inaccurate characterization of Detroit. This view is popularized by the national media…or by people who only drive in for a ballgame and don’t actually visit the city itself. Come hang with us for an afternoon in our neighborhood and you’ll fall in love with this community! The other off-base view is that there really is nothing wrong with Detroit – that it’s all about revitalization, new businesses, and cool urban farms;) Sometimes this viewpoint can be embraced by those who see the error of the other extreme. The reality is this – Detroit is both broken and beautiful! And God is at work here.

Now one more thought for those who would let these statistics keep them &/or friends and family away from living in Detroit. Is that kind of thinking rooted in faith in God or unbelief? Are not the exact number of our days, according to Psalm 139, already numbered? Has not God already declared the end from the beginning (Isaiah 46:10)? Does not God call us to count our lives as nothing so that we may fulfill our mission of testifying to the gospel of the grace of God (Acts 20:24, Rev 12:11)? And isn’t absence from the body, whether at a young age or old, presence with the Lord (2 Cor 5)? Certainly not everyone is called to live in a place like Detroit. But your response to the idea of living in such a place may reveal who you are trusting for safety & security. I am thankful that in my fears the gospel reminds me “that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39)

16 shot, 7 dead

A few weeks ago I was interviewed by Jim Essian, lead pastor of Paradox Church in Fort Worth, TX. (If his name sounds familiar it’s because his father, Jim Essian, was born in Detroit & played 12 years in the MLB before coaching the Chicago Cubs in 1991. Jim (Jr), raised in the Detroit area, also played 8 years of professional baseball.)

It was great to spend a Saturday morning showing Jim our neighborhood, eating breakfast at the HP Grill, and talking about church planting in Fort Worth & Detroit. Jim is a humble guy (he didn’t tell me he went deep 14 times for the Fort Worth Cats in 2004!) who has a real passion for Jesus and the mission of making Him known. As you can see in this video we had a little bit of fun together.

Front Porch Baptism

Posted: June 28, 2011 by mikehanafee in Detroit Info, Restore Church, Uncategorized

Yesterday was a first – baptizing someone on our front porch in a horse trough! It was a sweet privilege to baptize the husband of a couple who just moved into central Detroit to be part of Restore. Man, my heart is encouraged by younger Christians being fired up about making much of Jesus! The baptismal celebration also gave us a great opportunity with some of our neighbors to talk about what baptism is not & what it is. A few of the guys who came out for the service are part of our ManUp group. Will you pray for these young men to put their faith in Jesus?

Susan and I also had a great time at the Acts 29 Pastor & Wives Retreat in Colorado last week. As I posted on Facebook a few days ago, I am really really thankful for a sometimes painful, always beneficial, redemptively beautiful Retreat – may the exhortation, rebuke, correction, teaching, worship, & fellowship make me a better Christ follower, husband, father, and pastor! Here’s two links to an article and video on the retreat. (I have a brief cameo in the video but I am not collecting any royalties.) As you can see in a few of the photos below, the day after arriving home we were able to take advantage of the Friday free admission into the Detroit Riverfest. Nobody got sick on the rides but a some of us were just a bit scared;)

This Friday night we launch our summer neighborhood cookouts with a special Friday night July 4th holiday weekend kickoff party. We are really looking forward to connecting with and serving more of our neighbors as well as seeing who might be interested in going through Story-formed Way this fall.

As we want to maintain our focus on developing our first Missional Community in this phase of planting Restore we are going to meet just twice a month for worship gatherings (1st & 3rd Sundays), conduct a neighborhood service project on the 2nd Sunday and worship with another city church on the 4th Sunday.

We are deeply thankful for your support by way of prayer, resources, & encouragement!

Six Months on the Ground

Posted: June 3, 2011 by mikehanafee in Detroit Info, Family, Friends, Restore Church

A few days ago, Clete reminded me of something I had not thought of – we (the Hanafees) have now been in central Detroit for six months! I was not aware of this, maybe due to the strep throat (ugh!) I have battled the last week, or maybe just because of how busy we have been. At any rate it has been a GREAT six months in so many ways! I thought I would take a few minutes to share just a bit of what has been going down.

  • Tuesday we finished moving Clete’s shop from the outlying community, Hazel Park, to his Rosa Parks facility in our neighborhood – .8 miles from his house to be exact. Clete is now in central Detroit 24/7!  Btw, his new warehouse was once a headquarters for the infamous purple gang.
  • In terms of building friendships, we have far exceeded the goals we set in our 32:6 Initiative. Thanks for praying!
  • We are holding informal weekly worship gatherings of 30-40 people, mostly locals. In a few weeks we are having a baptismal service.
  • We just launched our first Missional Community! In a few weeks we will hold a commissioning service. We’ll do a blogpost in the near future & share our first missional community covenant with you.
  • Last Saturday we began our Sports & Ultimate Story Outreach at a park 5 blocks from our house. Yesterday I learned that the Student Ministries at Riverview Church is launching a summer long bottle drive to help fund this ministry!
  • I was recently elected to serve on the board of the Boston-Edison Neighborhood Association. This will be a fun, challenging, & effective way to continue to connect with and serve our community.
  • Paradox Church (Fort Worth, Tx), Renovation Church (Buffalo, NY), Vision 360 & some others recently began supporting Restore Church. With things moving faster than we anticipated, the last push for completing our support is critical. Next week we have an important meeting about a solid partnership with a strong national denominational group.
  • Thanks to the kindness of two young couples, I attended The Gospel Coalition Conference in Chicago. A few weeks later Clete & I attended a CCDA Regional Conference in Buffalo where we heard John Perkins speak & connected with friends in the Buffalo area.
  • John, Kevin, Davonte, & I ran a 5k (& finished!) at a supporting church’s fundraiser for their Mexico Mission Team.
  • We successfully stopped a robbery at a nearby house (using the firearm of an I-phone camera & some direct confrontation!).
  • Monday nights this summer at my house, we will lead a ministry to evangelize & disciple young men (age 15-19) called “MAN-UP – Becoming men who take responsibility through the Gospel”. I am praying that these young guys become captured by grace & captivated by gospel ministry.
  • The 9 Bontrager & Hanafee children are finishing out the school year well. Katie just won a leadership award for writing & communicating a freshmen transition program; Kellie is working hard, & Clete + Clay are finishing the school year at Glazer Elementary (where Clete said “lots of girls like me”). Kevin made all-city in the 4×800, Carolyn + Ian + Claire are enjoying no shortage of end of the year field trips, & Emma is still wide open.
  • Both the Bontrager & Hanafee families hope to hear in the coming weeks about purchasing 2 great houses in the heart of our ministry area.
  • In late June, Susan & I will be attending the A29 Pastors & Wives Retreat in Vail, Colorado!
As you are lead please use this as a pray list for us in the next weeks. Oh yeah, some of you have asked about recordings of Sunday sermons. We have videos of several messages & put them up on Vimeo. Shoot us an email if you want the links.

Mike and Clete left for Buffalo, New York this past Friday to go to a conference. That gave Ruth and me the great opportunity to take all of our boys to play in flag football games Saturday morning at a neighborhood school. A Christian man who lives in the suburbs but has a heart for the inner city decided a few years ago to start a free, five week flag football league for the kids in our area. He, along with some friends, has organized the games for children ages 5 to 16. They provide the jerseys, flags, footballs, snacks and water. About 50 kids showed up ready to go. The first game started at 10:30 and consisted of 5 to 7 year olds. That was a blast to watch because most of the little boys were more interested in picking the dandelions and rolling around in the grass than playing football. Clay Bontrager was in that game (he was serious about the game though, of course you know his dad!). The second game was the 8-11 year olds. Ian Hanafee and Clete Bontrager played in this one. These boys were much more serious about the game. The final game was the BIG boys in which our oldest son Kevin played along with three of his buddies from school. It had rained quite a bit the day before, so by the time this game started, the field was getting pretty muddy, AND the mice/rats started coming out which made quite a distraction. However, the coaches did a wonderful job of keeping things going, encouraging positive attitudes, teaching sportsmanship, and making it fun for the kids. One little boy named Sterling had a bit of a rough time during his game and wanted to quit, but Kevin and his friend Vonte went over, put their arms around him and encouraged him in such a positive way that he stayed—in fact he stayed the rest of the day.

After all the games were over and most of the kids left for home, our children and some of their friends, including Sterling, stayed at the park to play for a couple more hours. I went home to get ready for the “passel” of kids I knew would be showing up when they decided they were done at the park. How surprised I was when we ended up having 23 kids in our house!! Some played Barbie dolls, some played on the X-Box, some were out in the yard playing football (again) or tag, and some were playing with our dog Coal. My heart was filled with joy to see so many children (even a college age friend named Anthony) playing together, laughing, and just having a great time being with each other.

But while all this fun was taking place, and my heart was excited and thankful for what God is doing with the children in our community, I was deeply grieved and concerned for a little girl named Erin who the kids had met when they stayed at the park. She is a nine year old who was happy playing tag until her mother showed up. Her mother started yelling at her and grabbed her arm, twisting it up and behind her back. She then proceeded to not just slap Erin, but hit her repeatedly in the head while screaming horrific things with expletives that I cannot share. She then said, “You have one minute to get home before I break your neck.” Oh how my heart is aching for that little girl, and so many others who are living in violent, abusive, neglectful homes. You see, physical and verbal abuse is not uncommon, nor is it hidden here in Detroit. To see a child slapped or punched, yelled at and screamed at, or just not provided with simple care or attention, is not unusual.

We are finding that our home is becoming a place of safety, refuge, peace and genuine love to children who are not getting those things in their own homes. It really may be something as simple as a hug, looking at a child in the eyes when they are speaking to you, or reading a bedtime story to them (that is one of Ian’s friend’s favorite things when he spends the night! And the book he always wants me to read is “The Jesus Storybook Bible” by Sally Lloyd-Jones.) I have realized that my home is going to be full on the weekends with high schoolers all the way down to the little ones, and I need to be prepared by keeping my freezer stocked with food (lots of chicken nuggets)! But I also want to be prepared for those awesome gospel opportunities like when Ian’s friend, Eddie, asked, “If God expects everyone to be perfect in order to go to heaven, and none of us are perfect, how do we get to go then?” Wow, I was so thrilled when he asked that!!

It isn’t rocket science. Every one of us can open our hearts and homes to those around us. You just need to be willing. If you have experienced God’s love, graciousness, patience, kindness, mercy…for you, then you know how to give that to others. There are abused and neglected people, both children and adults, who need to be loved and accepted. My prayer is that those who come into our home would come to know and experience God’s love and acceptance of them through Jesus Christ.  Please pray with us about that. Please pray for the little girl, Erin, that she would be back at the park next Saturday, and that we would be able to develop a relationship with her and her family, especially the mother.

~ Susan

(And Michigan almost won too!)

Yesterday was a great finish to our first run through the Story-formed Way in the 48202. Originally this 10 week overview of the Bible was intended simply to strengthen the Bontrager & Hanafee families in our first months on the ground in central Detroit. But God had other plans. By the end of this study some 30 adults and kids have been participating – from some young couples & singles considering moving into the 48202 who are passionate about serving the Lord, to some neighbors including a family who has been praying for us for 5 months since they learned about us via this blog, to several classmates of our kids, to a school mom, to neighbors, & others.

In yesterday’s session, Life in the End, we saw that what began in a garden will end in a city where a restored people will enjoy God forever. And right now we get to be part of God gathering a people for His name as we show & tell Jesus! This is our prayer:

Jesus, Lord of my salvation, Savior of my soul.
Send me out to the world to make You known.
Jesus, King of every nation, this world’s only hope.
Send me out to the world to make you known.
Send me out to the world.

I wanna be Your hands and feet.
I wanna be Your voice every time I speak.
I wanna run to the ones in need, in the name of Jesus.
I wanna give my life away, all for Your kingdom’s sake.
Shine a light in the darkest place, in the name of Jesus.
In the name of Jesus.

And because there is going to be a great feast at the end we had a preliminary one, just for a little practice;) We also celebrated the Lord’s Supper and preached the gospel to one another in it, reminding ourselves that Jesus is our Righteousness, Life, Identity, Strength, Hope, & Everything.

It was a great day!

Oh, yeah and Michigan came within one basket of upsetting Duke!

I wish I had thought to take some pictures of our Story-formed Way gatherings but here are a few. At least you’ll be able to see what we ate (from a few perspectives), Boston-Edison’s angels, & Emma’s sorrow after the basketball game.
