Listen here for a strong pastoral word on true love as Pastor Clete preaches on Love, Hate, & Embrace. If you are going to love, you have to be a hater! And biblical love is a verb, it is deliberate action that flows from a heart gripped by grace. What a needful message in an age when “love” has been hijacked to mean a thousand things that are far from biblical! Let’s recapture authentic love! You can also check out Sunday’s announcements here.

We would like to give a big shout out to the mission team from Riverview Church in Lansing. I’m not a Spartan fan, but these men and women showed out the green and white as they worked hard on our facility:) Thank you Riverview!

I had the opportunity to preach at New Living Bible Church in Indianapolis from my favorite text, Revelation 7:9 on the gospel, glory, and race. You can check it out here. (I also enjoyed some of the best soul food I have ever eaten!) I can’t wait to have Pastor Norell, his wife Nicole, and some others from NLBC join us for a service this summer!

Finally, we’ll celebrate Church Planting Sunday on June 2. We’ll introduce some of our supporting churches as well as share ways we have been able to help a few other church plants. As part of partnering with other churches we will take an offering for Freedom Church in Baltimore, pastored by Michael Crawford, who preached at Restore a few months ago. Check out the video below about their exciting building fund drive. They have a great opportunity before them and we want to help them reach their goal.

A Post-Trip Letter from Mosaic Church

Posted: March 14, 2013 by mikehanafee in Friends, Mission Teams, new facility

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 (ESV)

Too much. There is just too much to share about Mosaic’s eight day, seven night trip to Restore Church last week. It was 167 hours of relationship building, working, goofing around, and outreach-ing (and, oh, some sleeping too). Where my words fail, I hope that the pictures taken throughout the week can fill in the gaps of our experience in central Detroit with Restore Church.

Leading up to the trip, the teams at Restore Church and Mosaic Church came up with three primary goals for the week. Throughout January and February, we were praying that God would bless this collaboration between our two local bodies. And as I reflect on this trip, God was faithful. He showed up! Not only did no one die, lose a limb, or have petty conflicts with one another, but He galvanized our teams together for His glory. Let’s briefly look at those three goals we had for the week.

1. To strengthen the long-term relationship between Restore Church and Mosaic Church, extending past this spring break, into summer projects and beyond.
Well, the jury is still technically out on this one. Only more time will determine if we continue to strengthen our relationship. However, I believe we are off to a phenomenal start. Throughout the week, relationship building was the priority. We worked it in every way we possible could. We intentionally teamed Restore people with Mosaic people on projects; essentially cross-pollinating our teams. And while we accomplished an incredible amount of work over the course of the week, we valued connecting with one another over getting tangible things done. The families of Restore were generously open with their homes, allowing us to shower and eat at their homes throughout the week. How can you not become better friends after sharing a loofah!?! Further, we had a Game Night on Friday night and we closed out the week by worshipping together on Sunday morning (the “Grand Opening” of the 1st floor Worship area!).

And while the summer is still months away, we already have times on the calendar for our two teams to meet again. As examples, Restore has graciously offered to come out to Ann Arbor / Ypsilanti at the end of March to help us with our Easter promotion. Just tomorrow night, some of our people are going to head back to Detroit to join in on Restore’s youth girls’ night. By God’s grace, He is continuing to knit our people together.

2. Mosaic people will experience sacrificial serving and outreach in a cross-cultural environment, while forming lasting, Christ-centered friendships that will be brought back to Ann Arbor.
Our time at Restore last week formed relationships within our Mosaic team like nothing else could. We ate 20+ meals together, we had morning devotions together, we sweated alongside one another, we shivered together (those first two nights :) , we became walking dust balls together, and on and on. Before this trip, many of our people didn’t know one another, or only knew their face but not even their name. As I’ve followed-up with our people that went on the trip, I’ve been encouraged to hear how many new, deep relationships were formed as a result of this trip. In some instances, I’ve heard, “You know what, [fill-in name here] isn’t as weird as I thought, he’s actually someone I can relate with!”. The week continually presented opportunities to experience and model the Christian walk (e.g. patience, loving one another, praying for one another, selflessness, etc.).

Each day we had “teaching” times that taught us a tremendous amount of what it is like to live and serve in Detroit, a city that is in a different context and culture than our home of Ann Arbor / Ypsilanti. Many of us came away with a greater appreciation for Detroit and a deeper understanding of its history and the numerous implications on present-day Detroit. These teaching times were organized by Restore and covered the following topics.

  • Experiences of a Long-Time Detroiter – Renee Gunn
  • Moving into Detroit: Experience of New Detroiters – Ruth Bontrager, Susan Hanafee, John & Emily Decker
  • An Overview of Detroit History & Restore’s Vision for D-Groups and DNA Groups – Mike Hanafee
  • The History of Restore Church – Clete Bontrager
  • Gospel Identities – Clete Bontrager & Mike Hanafee
  • Personal Testimonies and Overview of Monthly Manhood Academy – Wadsworth Pilot & Matt Golden

Many of these teaching times went longer than the time allotted,  but it was a blessing. We got to hear the speakers’ personal testimonies and perspectives on living and serving in an urban, inner-city environment.

3. In collaboration with leaders and members of Restore Church, Mosaic will help tackle work, evangelize, and perform administrative projects identified by Restore Church leaders.
As the pictures show, God used the people of Restore and Mosaic to get an incredible amount of work done! While most of the efforts were concentrated on renovating the Post Office, we also had a team helping renovate the basement of a member of Restore. While the list isn’t comprehensive, some of what God accomplished last week includes:

  • Removed the ceiling tiles in the new worship area on the first floor
  • Demolished the half wall above the old PO boxes and the bulletproof glass wall
  • Filled a 30 yard dumpster (the size of a bus!) to the brim from the demolition projects
  • Photographed, cataloged and posted items for sale on Craigslist
  • Sorted, moved and organized everything that was in the new worship area in the future nursery area
  • Built four fowling boards that double as platforms for Sunday morning worship
  • Swept and mopped the 1st floor of the P.O. a gazillion times
  • Helped pass out 6,000+ promotional flyers for Restore’s Easter Egg Hunt

Again, there is too much to share. We praise God for the opportunity to serve alongside Restore Church. We love you guys and are charged up to continue to strengthen our relationship over the coming weeks, months and years.

Grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you,

Joseph Hutchinson
Pastoral Resident at Mosaic Church
Ann Arbor, MI

For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, I do not cease to give thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. Ephesians 1:15-23 (ESV)

Your broken life now is your best life, now and forever. So what does the broken life look like? Find out from a woman who gave her costliest for the Lord, because she knew He would give His costliest for her. You can watch below.

In addition to lots of stuff going on during the week as we host a mission team from Mosaic Church Ann Arbor, we have three big events lined up for the coming weekend. EVERYONE IS INVITED!

Friday 6:30 PM - Praise/Pizza/Fowling Party. We are kicking off a long awaited cadence of Friday night parties at The PO for the entire Restore fam & neighborhood.

Saturday noon - neighborhood canvassing for our Easter Egg Hunt. 10,000 cards to hand out. Yep, that’s right, no typo, TEN THOUSAND cards! (Thanks Mosaic!) Bring your friends, their friends, and their friends!

Sunday 11AM - our first worship service downstairs at The PO. In a miracle almost on par with the Red Sea Crossing we started on time Sunday & intend to continue to do so to better serve one another better! We are asking for a second miracle as daylight savings time begins Sunday. To put a carrot out there and provide an opportunity for fellowship, we’ll do coffee and donuts (maybe breakfast) at 10AM Sunday. Perhaps we are looking for a third miracle;)

Finally, in Sunday’s service we also celebrated Matt & Maja Golden moving into the neighborhood. If you want to hear how it all happened, starting at Slow’s BBQ 2 years ago, watch their testimony below.

If you care about reaching your city, your time will not be wasted in watching this message by Michael Crawford of Freedom Church in Baltimore. If I had a bishop, it would be Mike! I love this brother’s gospel fueled passion for making disciples in the urban core. Something really special went down this weekend! Restore Church looks forward to learning from and walking with Freedom Church as we seek to make disciple making disciples and plant church planting churches. In this message Mike shares 5 recommendations for Restore Church. And perhaps yours.

Please pray for our upcoming series in Mark, our first week long mission team coming in to help prep for building renovation and the far bigger goal of building relationships, and for a massive Easter Egg Hunt we are planning.

How do I reach people around me? That’s the cry somewhere in the heart of every person who has been rescued by Christ! Paul’s interaction in Athens in Acts 17 is not a recipe but it does gives us 4 basic principles on how to live out our missionary identity, whether you live in the city, suburbs, or a rural area. Check out the video below to learn what an urban missionary sees, feels, does, & says.

This Saturday (October 27) at 9AM you have an opportunity to help us with some interim projects at The Post Office while we formulate a long term layout design. Specifically, we will paint “the upper room” (our short term worship space) & stairway, paint & spruce up 2 downstairs bathrooms, and knock down another wall (argh!) to prepare for renovation. A team from Bethesda Baptist will be helping the Restore crew with this work day.  There’s definitely room for more to serve with the work team so let us know if you like to join us Saturday – we’d love your help! You can contact Clete for details (cletebontrager@resdetroit.org, 503-431-9854).

A building!

Posted: September 28, 2012 by mikehanafee in Church Planting, Mission Teams, Restore Church, the gospel, Uncategorized, Vision, worship

It happened! In a matter of days we found not just an interim site but a longterm facility! Last night Restore Church closed on a former post office building right in the middle of the neighborhood yet easily accessible via main roads. We are staggered by God’s grace & provision in this! I feel like a kid at Christmas who can’t stop looking at his new gift. God really moved! So many of you prayed faithfully for this to happen. Thank you!  May our joy in this be yours as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you for praying!

In addition to trying to get the cheesy lines out of our system (like, we’re going postal or where God’s mail is delivered!) we are moving quickly to get the utilities changed over, security upgraded, the upstairs cleaned up as an initial worship area, & a few other pressing tasks accomplished. We will be working on a layout combined with a project list. We have a lot of details to work out but if you are interested in partnering with us to renovate the facility here are some areas to consider.

  • We need someone skilled in design layout to help us create the optimal use of space.
  • We need work teams to help us do an initial clean-up of the inside & outside of the entire facility.
  • We need skilled work teams from churches who will “own” specific areas like the children’s area, worship space, foyer, restrooms, & parking lot.

Sunday at 11AM we will worship as a church body at this facility for the first time! Doors will open at 10AM. 2701 Joy Road 48206.

As we tell the story of how God provided this great building we’ll celebrate God’s greatest provision of all in Jesus Christ – our wrath-absorbing, death-defeating, bondage-breaking, life-giving, all-satisfying Lord!

Tomorrow (Saturday) at 3:30PM we will gather at the building to unload chairs from the truck & clean-up the upstairs for Sunday’s worship gathering. We’d love to get as many hands as possible! Call me at 313-819-0150 if you need details.

BUMP Kickoff

Posted: August 1, 2012 by mikehanafee in Detroit Info, Mission Teams, Restore Church, the gospel, Uncategorized

Whew! It has been a busy but sweet 72 hours with the BUMP & FBT mission teams. Last night’s spontaneous worship service with the teams & Restore Church at Gordon Park was off the chain as we read Scripture, prayed, & sang (including a impromptu rendition of “All I Have is Christ” below). A woman whose son is in jail gave a blood earnest exhortation to walk with Jesus that few of us will forget & others shared strong words of testimony. After that we enjoyed an ice-cream chill out under the streetlight.

In the mornings we (various Restore peeps) pour into the teams to equip us together to pour into the kids of our neighborhood in the afternoon camp. Please pray God will do amazing things in the 48202/48206 this week!
