It was a blast kicking off our new series on the Holy Spirit yesterday! In this message I give four reasons why we need this series. To avoid unbiblical extremes of strange fire & no fire. To be biblicalreformed & always being reformed. To pursue gospel-centralitybeing Jesus-centered versus Spirit-led is a false dichotomy. The Holy Spirit is the gift of the Gospel poured out by Jesus according to the promise of the Father. Because being on mission makes us desperate. A church that discovers it’s all about Jesus (salvation & sanctification) makes the Devil say, “Oh no, now they are going to grow in the gospel.” A church that discovers that Jesus gives His people the Spirit makes the devil quake, “Oh no, now they are going to go with the gospel!.” We began the series by looking at how the Holy Spirit is not a sanctified purple haze but a Powerful Person of the Godhead. He is a Workhorse, a Beast (urban dictionary definition – check out the message for details;). We are on an exciting journey & invite you along! Next Sunday we will be dialing in on how the Holy Spirit indwells Christians. How does that happen? What does it mean? Strong stuff!

I spend the first 12 minutes before the sermon talking about the church putting violent crime in our area on blast. I discuss how both crime investigation & media coverage of violent crimes vary according to race. Please pray for us and provide input on how we can make a difference! The sermon actually begins at about the 11:50 mark of the audio. (The video does not include that discussion.)

“Father – I’m so grateful to present this opportunity to the church leaders you have brought here today. Please don’t let me screw it up… Amen.”

That was my prayer before heading up to the front.

As some of you may know, we hosted church leaders from all over metro Detroit (and some even outside of it!) to share with them what God is leading Restore Church to do with the building we obtained last fall. We are so grateful for a permanent meeting facility. However, maximizing this tool from God so that we can serve our community better is the next step.

On February 26th Mike and Clete shared a short history of Restore Church, coupled with a few videos/pics of what God is doing in central Detroit. We also heard some testimonies from members of Restore Church – how God brought them to Restore and what he is doing in their lives.

The lunch culminated by presenting our “first steps” to renovate the P.O. and to ask the church leaders who were able to come to invest in Restore Church. And by “invest” we mean more than just money and work teams. See, if this was just about a building, we would have just “begged and borrowed” until we could get the funds together. Instead, we want to see gospel relationships result from this building renovation. This building has become an opportunity for Restore Church to build some deep, meaningful “gospel centered” relationships with churches all across (and beyond) metro Detroit. To put it a little more simple… “We don’t just want money – we want your life to touch ours. We want you to pour into us and we want to pour into you. We want you to press the gospel into our lives and we want to press the gospel into your lives.”

That is what this building we be. It will be a place that brought together gospel relationship. Churches in the ‘burbs will now have close, ministry connection to a church in the city. Churches outside the city will now have a connection inside the city – an insight that they may not otherwise have. Restore Church will have relationships with churches that they can partner with to serve both communities. We have resources they don’t – they have resources that we don’t. What a beautiful way that we can serve each other.

This is the kind of mentality that led Mosaic Church from Ann Arbor MI to send a ministry team out this week. They are going to pour into us and serve by working on the building. We are going to pour into them by including them in our Discipleship Groups and teaching sessions from Mike and Clete. They will also get to spend some concentrated time together with members from Restore to share testimonies and what God is doing in our neighborhood/city.

And we are going to serve each other. That is what the church does.

When I closed things on the 26th, I challenged everyone to pray about how God would have them be involved in the renovation of the P.O. Is it financially? Is it through a work team? Is it through concentrated prayer for the cause of this church in this city? Let me issue that challenge to you – Do you think God might be moving you to be a part of Restore Church in some way? We have a lot of work to do, but we are so excited about the relationships that will be built because of it!

In the pictures section, you will see a post card we encouraged the attendees to take back to their churches. Please take some time to look at it, and please take some time to pray for Restore Church!

A Video History of Restore

Posted: February 22, 2013 by mikehanafee in Restore Church, Vision

I’m about reduced to tears watching this visual & visceral presentation of God’s amazing grace in the history of Restore Church. From a dream of 2 families out west to the reality of today, God has rolled His sleeves up and displayed His glory. Please pray that He will blow us away in the months and years to come with stories and stories of redemption and transformation. Pray for deepening connections in our neighborhood, deepening growth in those God has already gathered, leadership development, and that we would have a massively Luke 19:41 heart for our community and city. Thanks Thom Fogarty for doing a great job on this video!

If you care about reaching your city, your time will not be wasted in watching this message by Michael Crawford of Freedom Church in Baltimore. If I had a bishop, it would be Mike! I love this brother’s gospel fueled passion for making disciples in the urban core. Something really special went down this weekend! Restore Church looks forward to learning from and walking with Freedom Church as we seek to make disciple making disciples and plant church planting churches. In this message Mike shares 5 recommendations for Restore Church. And perhaps yours.

Please pray for our upcoming series in Mark, our first week long mission team coming in to help prep for building renovation and the far bigger goal of building relationships, and for a massive Easter Egg Hunt we are planning.

Just as movie trailers give preview glimpses of movies, the church is to be a beautiful preview of Revelation 7:9, all kinds of people worshiping God together for His mercy and to His glory. Sunday we concluded our ONE series by looking at 4 specific ways we can pursue being this kind of church. While were done with this series, we have only begun pursuing being a Rev 7:9 church! During the post service meal several people shared their thoughts about walking with Restore. You can check out a few of these interviews below.

Please pray for our Dgroups as we lean into the missional opportunities of the warm weather months (yes, they are coming!). Over the next few months two of our Dgroups will be going through The Story and the other two will be covering our gospel identities and rhythms.

Between Alvin Sanders teaching Saturday night and preaching Sunday morning and then launching our 4th Dgroup it was a great weekend at Restore! In the Saturday night session Alvin shared the good, bad, & ugly of his experience planting a church in inner city Cincinnati. You can listen in on that interactive session here (your time won’t be wasted!) and watch Sunday’s message from 1 Corinthians 13 below.

We closed Sunday’s service with a special time of prayer as we commissioned our 4th Dgroup, lead by Clete & Ruth. They will meet Tuesday evenings at the Bontrager house on Lawrence across from Central High School on Linwood. Please pray for this new Dgroup and the wisdom & provision for launching the next two Dgroups.

Sunday we close out our ONE Series by looking at how the church is display the destruction of racism. May it be increasingly on earth as it is in heaven! We are following the service with a taco dinner at The PO. As a reminder, MMA & Triple FC meet this Friday night at 7:30. Also, if you have a chance stop by the Duffield Branch Library (2507 West Grand Blvd, 48208) Saturday at 1PM for the 33rd annual Black Heroes Oratorical Contest. I learned a lot last year and have the privilege of serving as one of the judges again this year.

“These premises shall not be occupied by a negro or colored person” reads the original deed to our building. Our history as a nation is drenched in racism and every one of our stories, whether you realize or not, has been shaped by racism. Yesterday, we began our ONE series by looking at how the truth of Imago Dei dismantles the very basis of racism. From conception, every human of every color is made in the image of God – therefore, every human is valuable, beautiful, & equal. But there is also something else we all are, sinful. Sin has marred our Imago Dei like graffiti. And we have all been tagged in two ways – by the sin of others, & by our own sin. Thankfully Jesus came as the perfect Imago Dei. He was not marred by sin but for sin, in our place.  He suffered at the hands of men the injustice many have experienced and then suffered at the hand of God for the sins all of us have committed. He redeems His people, gathers us into His eternal family by His blood, & begins a life of transforming us so that our Imago Dei can increasingly show off & show out His glory!

The room was way too hot and the sermon the longest I have ever preached (I’m going to stewy away from that record in the future!) but the Spirit really seemed to show up. And during communion several people stood and bore bold, broken, public repentance. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed in 43 years of life, 17 years as a Christian. We feel as if we are being swept up in something much bigger than us. What is certain is that what is happening is something only God can do. Only God. We tremble at His grace & power. I invite you to listen in on a topic that we are passionate about and that leads right to the heart of God in the gospel.

With about 115 in attendance on Sunday we are pretty close to being maxed out in the upper room. Moving the nursery downstairs has created a little bit of space but we need to get the building renovated as quickly as possible. Would you come for lunch on Feb 26 at The PO to hear a bit of our story and how you might be able to renovate the building with us? You can reference the information card below.

We are launching our 4th Dgroup the first week of February on Lawrence St (across from Central High on Linwood) under the leadership of Clete & Ruth. Also, the very first couple who committed to Restore, 2 years ago when we weren’t much more than a dream, will now serve as apprentice Dgroup leaders. I’m thrilled about this! We need to launch 2 more Dgroups in the near future, so please pray for wisdom & provision.

Clete opened up Sunday’s Neighborhood Welcome Service by saying that if anything good was going down in Restore it was only because of God’s grace. Truth! We’ll take credit for the other stuff;) It was sweet to celebrate with our family and neighbors what God is doing. In the message I shared the four pillars of Restore Church. Please pray for us as we look to multiply our Dgroups as well as create an interim nursery at The PO.

“White People Curious”

Posted: December 9, 2012 by mikehanafee in Restore Church, testimonies, the gospel, Vision, worship

Flyer baby. Those people have lost their mind! Not stepping over people who are not black. Laying down your life for your neighbor. Beauty to ashes. All this & more, with a good dose of humor & a lot of encouragement, in this testimony by long term Detroiter, Jesus lover, & Restore family member Renee Gunn in today’s Neighborhood Welcome Service.

Blood & guts – that’s what we say Dgroups are to Restore Church! And that’s why yesterday’s Dgroup Commissioning Sunday was a huge day in the life of Restore Church. You can watch part of the service below as we highlighted 4 essentials to healthy Dgroups. Never Forget. Go & Tell. Do the Impossible. Fools for Jesus.

Dgroups are groups of fools for Jesus committed to pressing Jesus deeper into one another while spreading Jesus into our neighborhood.

Dgroups meet Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday nights. If you’d like to participate in one contact Clete or me. You can check out pics from the last meeting of one of our Dgroups at the bottom.

Saturday we our having a major work day at The PO as we seek to clear out the entire first floor. Come out & serve with us if you any part of the day open. This week an architectural team begins work on a comprehensive layout proposal!
